One of my favorite volunteer activities is cleaning up highways. It may sound unpleasant, but it’s an incredibly easy way to give back. And it’s not gross. No worse than taking out your own trash every day. It’s arguably less gross, because these programs often provide volunteers with gloves and “spears” to pick up the trash.
The best part? With a group of friends, the entire project usually takes less than an hour.
For student organizations and individuals looking for an low-planning, cost-free way to volunteer, Adopt-A-Street programs are a perfect fit! Coordinating an event usually takes three simple steps:
- Contacting your local city to sign up.
- Committing to pick up your designated portion of the road twice a year.
- Calling the city after you cleaned up your road so they could pick up the trash bags.
So, if you’re looking for an easy way to give back, look into your city’s road clean-up / adopt-a-street program.
