Many of you have heard about the deadly tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri a few days ago. The damage–devastating. The death toll–incomprehensible.
Weather experts are going so far as to call this an F5 tornado…the deadliest single tornado since 1953. This tragedy hits all too close to home for me, as I lived outside of Joplin for three years while I attended college.
I know Joplin. I know people from Joplin. My heart breaks for those I know and those I don’t know who have been affected by this natural disaster.
I have, however, been so encouraged by the outpouring of love and support from compassionate people and organizations. The following is just a brief list of organizations and causes working to provide relief and aid to the people of Joplin. If you have the time and a few pennies to give, I encourage you to get involved.
- American Red Cross (the Red Cross is currently overwhelmed with in-kind donations, but is still in need of financial assistance to help rebuild the city of Joplin.)
- Jars of Love (Jacin is pledging 10o% of her proceeds to help tornado victims.)
- Humane Society of United States and Humane Society of Missouri (sending aid to assist the animals displaced by this tornado)
- OzarkFirst (helping compile information for those struck by the disaster. At this link, you’ll find more ways to help.)
- …and so many more.
Note: With all charities and non-profits, make sure any site you visit is properly registered and trustworthy before sending money. Also, do you research and make sure your help does the most good possible.
